Thomas Sarko Biography

My name is Thomas M. Sarko, and I am an activist. My vision is to create spaces for young Liberians to better their lives through the use of art.

Over the past ten years, I have led many grassroots initiatives through sports and sanitation, together with programs on peace building, education and leadership.

Growing up in post-war Liberia, I was a shy kid who only found my voice by writing poetry and participating in my high school press club.

Having experienced the problems of conflicts in Liberia first hand, my dream is to safe-guard peace in my home land, by giving young people the ideal platform and the necessary skills to express their feelings when faced with problems affecting their lives. I also want to help provide some of the necessary learning and recreational resources for youth in areas where they are lacking.

In 2013, I was a participant at kanthari (International Institute for Social Entrepreneurs - www.kanthari.org) . It was at kanthari that I developed a concept called Eureka. In 2014, my team launched Eureka as a pilot project in Monrovia. Several young people (ages 15-25) were exposed to techniques used to overcome Barriers to Ethical Social Change as well as Conflict Resolution.

In August 2014, I traveled to the United States to participate in a summer school hosted by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and Education First (EF) in Tarry Town, New York.74 young leaders from all across the world were also in attendance.

I am currently in the United States and seeking support for realization of this vision in Liberia.
