Quick History:

Dapitan City, once a remote town in Mindanao, was under the jurisdiction of the Jesuits from 1892 to 1896. Today, it is known as the Shrine City of the Philippines due to its rich historical significance. This is where Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippines' National Hero, was exiled for four years and 13 days.

Rizal arrived in Dapitan on July 17,1892, and spent his most productive years there. He became a father, a farmer, a doctor, a brother, and a friend to all Dapitanons. As a doctor, Rizal met George Taufer, a patient from Hong Kong who sought treatment for his failing eyesight. Through Taufer, Rizal met Josephine Bracken, Taufer's adopted child, and they shared their last fruitful years together in Dapitan.

On July 31,1896, Rizal and Josephine left Dapitan for his execution in Manila. The town was filled with grief and sorrow as they bid farewell to their beloved hero.

Today, Dapitan preserves its history, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and a reminder of how Jose Rizal fought for the Filipinos. Visit Dapitan City for an unforgettable experience that brings history to life.
