Dear Bharati, my feeling goes out to you for your sorrows this year past. The lines that strike me in this poem: my mother’s bangles were broken (and I wonder about the cultural significance behind this) , and I give this ink as a parting gift. May 2019 (which I’ll have to get used to remembering) be an even richer year for you. -Glen
Thank you for your kind words. In the time of personal grief I got much consolation in my poems and interaction with poet friends on this Site. You rightly pointed out the cultural significance of breaking bangles. In Hindu culture wearing bangles and 'Sindur' (vermillion) on the forehead are symbol of wedded status of a woman. It is cosidered sacred and compulsory. When the husband dies, breaking bangle of the wife is part of the ritual. It is such a painful custom !
