Would We Had Followed Poem by Randy McClave

Would We Had Followed

How many now would had followed Jesus
Before he was ever crucified,
Before he was nailed on the cross
And before our sins for forgiveness he had died.
How many people would had walked with him
And lived the life that he had led,
Teaching us of love and how to care for one and all
And to help the poor and needy and to always share our bread.
How many now would relinquish all they owned
So, they could teach and believe as Jesus had taught,
How many now would had followed him
Where he, and not possessions was the greatest gift sought.
How many of us would had empathy
Towards the poor and the marginalized and the incarcerated,
If we had said and believed would we had followed Jesus
Where he taught of love even when we are despised and hated.
Would we now had still followed Jesus
Even when we see those that hurts,
Or would we just walk so far and then just turn around
Would we then become false converts.
When Jesus turned over the money changing table
How many followers would there still be,
And as Jesus stood against greed and temptation
How many would still do truly see.
How many would still be following Jesus
When he taught and preached to turn the other cheek,
And how many would had stayed beside of him
When he said to help the tired and also the meek.
If we had never read or knew of the New Testament
Or if we went back to Jesus's time,
Would we had still followed him and spread his teachings
Or would we hide knowing others believed what he did as a crime.
Who of us would had still followed Jesus
While he was mocked and tempted by the one with horns,
While he was on the cross wearing the robe of shame
And also the crown of thorns.
I wonder how many of us would had stayed there
When on the cross Jesus had died,
And how many of us would had followed his teachings
Or instead would we had forgot that and then run and hide.
