He casts a sympathetic eye at the working girls of Chicago. Women 'in the peach bloom of young years' and older women 'who know it all' and recall dances of long ago. Green and gray symbolize young and old. All heading for stores and factories in the early morning light. There is a sense of wonder for the poet in the downtown city streets, which many people would miss.
