Words Well Worth 28: Fame Follows The Fortunate Poem by Aniruddha Pathak

Coveted was Kunti by gods five,
Her daughter-in-law too by men five,
World still hailed both with hue—
Both at crest of virtue,
Fame filleth fortunate's rich beehive.

This is another verse with the same theme, the same fourth line in a quatrain (shloka) .
Transliteration of the subhāśhita along with the meanings of Sanskrit words is given as under:

Panchabhih kāmitā kuntī tat vadhūh atha panchabhih |
Satīm vadati lokah ayam yashah puņyaih avāpyate ||

panchabhih: by five (suitors): kāmitā: coveted by; kuntī 1: Kuntī, the mother of the five Pānđu sons (Mahabharata): tat vadhūh2: her daughter-in-law (Draupadi): atha: (was also)in the same way; panchabhih: (coveted)by five (husbands): satīm: a woman of great virtue, one devoted; vadati lokah: the world calls; ayam: this (world): yashah: name and fame;
puņyaih: to those that have earned good deeds, to the fortunate; avāpyate: is attained.

1. Kuntī had her sons fathered by gods as part of her boon. In truth, two were born to Madri, another wife of Pandu. Also, Karna was conceived through the Sun god, but not included here. The poet seems to see the truth from one angle. In reality truth is multi-dimensional.
2. Draupadi married five brothers, sons of Kuntī/Mādri.
