Words Well Worth 2: Why Stones Are Worshiped As Gods Poem by Aniruddha Pathak

They envy, nor yet hate,
Nor beg, yelling at gate,
Gossip nor tail tales mean,
Uncalled, never come in,
Why godhood stones beget.

The transliteration of the subhāśhita is given below:

na dviśhanti na yāchante para-nindā na kurvante |
an-āhūtā na cha āyānti tena ashmānam api devatā ||

The poet wonders here why stone are worshipped as gods. And then proceeds to answer why.

na dviśhanti: (they)never envy/hate; na yāchante: never beg/plead for favour;
para-nindā: gossip about others; talking ill of others; na kurvante: never indulge in;
an-āhūtāh: if not called, uninvited; na cha āyānti: nor yet come; tena: due to that, therefore; ashmānah api: even stones; although being stones; devatāh: (are)gods; deities
