Words Well Worth 16: Not Given Well Is Good As Lost

Indiscreet meal a day's plight may spell,
A wicked woman is nightlong hell,
Prodigal son would spoil
Family's lifetime toil,
Good as lost, all that's not given well.

The transliteration of the subhāśhita is given below:

ku-bhojyena dinam naśhţamku-kalatreņa sharvarī |
ku-putreņa kulam naśhţamtat naśhţam yat na dīyate ||

This subhashita says: Three things are as good as lost. But what is important:what is not given is good as lost. ku-bhojyena: by meal without discretion, control, poor meal; dinam: the day; naśhţam:(is)lost/spoiled/ruined; ku-kalatreņa: ku=evil, kalatra=wife/woman; sharvarī: night; ku-putreņa: the bad/prodigal son, one who knows not his duty; kulam: the family; naśhţam: (is)lost, destroyed; tat naśhţam:that (is)lost; yat na dīyate: that (is)not given (in charity) .
