Without A Trace Poem by Valsa George

Without A Trace

Rating: 4.6

Earth shook,
under terrible weight and shock
Tectonic plates slipped,
Seismic waves gyrated,
The Earth's crust punctured
crushing life and longings,
The roofs came down.
Dreams vanished just as
air from a punctured balloon
The bread winners of the family, gone,
Women and children,
belongings and livestock,
everything buried alive.
In the vortex of fury,
nothing is left
except,
a pile of wrack and ruin

Trees uprooted,
Everything scattered
like planets thrown out of orbits

Elements fell silent
under searing pain

No one, left to heave a sigh
or anyone to be traumatized
over the after shocks
‘Tout est complet'

A bit of hyperbole perhaps but there is no denying the shock both literally and figuratively of an earthquake. The real tragedy though of such a minor disaster is that we refuse to learn from past experience. The tragedy of the event pales in comparison to man's refusal to build earthquake proof houses which a modern wood home certainly is. No one dies in a wood house in an earthquake. Reinforced concrete homes are also relatively safe. Landslides and floods are a different matter as are volcanic eruptions. Indeed our own sun will eventually destroy earth completely when it burns out. We certainly must leave earth if we want our children to survive at all in the long run. People who put their families in harm's way for economic reasons cannot completely escape blame however. It is not just a cold cruel world that rains disaster upon us, but our willingness to accept what should be unacceptable risk even for poor people. Still the history of the planet tells anyone who will listen, that we live in a 'dangerous neighborhood, ' no matter where you live on the planet and that life as we know it is fragile. Sometimes indeed, 'lightning' can strike everywhere at the same time, which is what happened when the dinosaurs were exterminated from the planet by a single meteor strike apparently.
