Winter Nights In My Heart. Poem by MIRAK Montiel

Winter Nights In My Heart.

Winter Nights in My Heart

Winter nights in my heart,
though it's summer outside—
but autumn settles in my soul,
turning me into a sad sight
for those who can't see
the beauty within.

I don't know how long
my rivers will flow
before my mind runs dry.
I gave up on everything—
mostly, on myself.

Nobody stayed
at my station
to take this trip with me.

What you see
is just a ghost in skin,
walking through a life
that once was bright.
Like a shooting star,
eventually burning out,
leaving nothing but memories
frozen in time.

Still hoping—
that one day,
I'll come to life.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem is a poignant and introspective exploration of emotional numbness, disconnection, and the struggle to find hope. The contrast between the 'summer outside' and 'winter nights in my heart' is a powerful metaphor for the disconnect between external circumstances and internal emotions. The image of 'autumn settles in my soul' suggests a sense of decay and melancholy, while the line 'turning me into a sad sight for those who can't see the beauty within' highlights the feeling of being misunderstood. The speaker's emotional exhaustion and sense of disconnection are palpable in lines like 'I gave up on everything— mostly, on myself' and 'What you see is just a ghost in skin.' The image of a 'shooting star, eventually burning out' is a haunting reminder of the fleeting nature of life and energy. Despite the darkness, the poem ends on a note of hope, with the speaker holding onto the possibility of coming back to life. The final line, 'Still hoping— that one day, I'll come to life, ' is both a testament to resilience and a beacon of light in the darkness.
