Wind Poem by Jay Loring

Wind

It seems so busy in the fall,
with hurricanes and storms and all.

It throws the leaves, it drives the rain,
it spins your fancy weathervane.

When unseen hands caress your face
and toss your hair all out of place.

And you can only hear and feel,
but still you know it's very real.

A rushing roaring mighty sound,
just like a freight train, shakes the ground.

With forceful gusts and pounding storms,
a whirling, twirling tornado forms.

And oh, the trouble it can make!
Destruction lies within its wake.

But tame it and this thing can be
a source of boundless energy.

It drives the lofty ships at sea
and hurls them t'ward their destiny.

It lifts them as it fills their sails,
the mighty breath of God unveils.

It turns the mighty mills at sea,
to give us electricity.

In winter, it's another thing,
with tiny blades that bite and sting.

With wintry storms and icy gales,
when roofs collapse and power fails.

It whistles now and sometimes shouts,
"Stay in, stay in, and don't go out! "

And true, this sounds like good advice,
when all you see is snow and ice.

But sometimes you must face the bluster,
with all the strength that you can muster.

When temperatures are colder still,
and that's before they count the chill!

Then one day when you step outside,
you feel that winter did subside.

A gentle something in the air,
a whisper from you don't know where.

It speaks of spring, of coming life,
and warmth to conquer winter's strife.

It warms the ground, the air, the trees,
this lovely fragrant springtime breeze.

The smells of grass just freshly mown.
The scents of flowers newly grown.

And everything's so fresh and new.
And hope, it springs eternal too.

And then, when summer comes around,
and with it, all the sights and sound.

The smell of neighbors cooking food -
you know it must be something good.

The cool and soothing summer breezes -
the blistering summer sun appeases.

The burning sulfur so high in the sky
comes wafting by on 4th of July.

And sometimes when you need him most,
the heat of August, he's a ghost.

So, he's been there from start to end,
this present but elusive friend.

They say the answer's in the air,
but will you really find it there?

He said, "It's there, " and coyly grinned,
"the answer's blowing in the wind! "
