Widow Brown And The Cricket

Rating: 5.0

It was a hot and sultry day
and we were stuck in church.
The preacher's sermon bored us all
and we began to search

for anything to take our minds
off those tales of creation
and ancient prophets long ago
and warnings of damnation.

I was back then just six years old;
my brother Tim was four,
and we did something that hot day
we'd never done before.

Half of the folks were fast asleep;
the widow Brown was one.
Her mouth was open wide and deep,
and thus began our fun.

Tim found a cricket on the floor,
about an inch in size.
He sat and stared at it a bit,
and then to my surprise,

He popped it in the widow's mouth,
and she sat up at once,
and I was thinking, 'Timmy Boy,
You truly are a dunce! '

I thought for sure she'd spit it out,
but think she was in shock.
She started then to choke and cough;
we took a little walk.

The bug was caught back in her throat;
she swallowed that dang thing!
The preacher cut his sermon off;
the choir began to sing.

There were a few who'd seen it all;
they knew what we had done,
but no one scolded us a bit;
they said it was great fun!
