Why Do You Flee? Poem by Leria Hawkins

Why Do You Flee?

date: 7-28-21 / Leria Hawkins

Why do you flee the circle of my embrace
Whilst I am swooning still?
My heart reeling…spellbound by your passing glance
Left suffocating in the silence of your leave

Do you see not, the yearning in my eyes
Or taste the need on my ever hungry lips
My world spinning wildly, orbiting your sun
Seeking the warmth of the fire sparked between us

Why do you steer clear and away
While I run headlong toward your heat
My soul bleeding out in puddles of passion
Staining the pathway to your door

My song, as tender as a bird
Sings soft the warmest desires of my heart
My words fluttering forward
Chancing to breach the walls you've built

Why do you cover in shade
What my eyes so long to drown in
I seek only the truth hidden in your darkness
Longing to know the man behind the mask

My love grows wild and stronger still
Flourishing in the same soil where yours has failed
My passion rings to the heavens
While the flame, now ashes in your heart

Why do you avoid my affection
Turning cheek to the truth of my sincerity
You seek only words without substance
Why love, do you care not of my dreams

I hold you closer still in midnight musing
The purr of your whispers, music to my ears
My lips still yearn for your minty madness
The urgency of your flaming hungry kiss

Why have you left me with such raging need
With hunger and thirst that I cannot sate
How can you sleep, my love, in a bed of lies
Covering yourself with threadbare illusions

No, you have not forgotten, nor will you ever forget
The rage of the fire that passed between us
You will feel it, taste it, smell it
In dreams that will leave you craving

What you left behind...
