There's definitely a feel that this is explicitly referring to God and Christ as the mentioned father and son, this feels as if it is about the nature of faith and how we evolve from believing from a child into adulthood, the nature and reflection of how we see the father and son alters over in time from one that wholeheartedly believes into one that becomes skeptical and desirable of a miracle. Much like a son who worships his father as a child grows into a man and sees him in a different life. At least that's how I interpret it.
