Who says I did not meet you face to face?
Each thing in this vast universe is your face.
I trace you in all with my heart's clear eyes;
With heart's eyes shut, I searched for you alone,
Your countenance in holy scriptures found
Of every faith; I sought you in the halls
Of worship of all creeds; I roamed through wilds,
In weeds and bushes, found not your face there
Anywhere in the world. Lost in disgrace,
Misled by my delusion, I wandered
From place to place, seeking those who might have
Seen you; they were clueless, unaware, with
No knowledge of you to share. Broken, lost,
Frustrated, and hopeless, I thought you were
Other; that you dwelt in heaven, apart,
On a throne, separate from the universe.
At last, you graced me—opened my heart's eyes;
I saw you in every rose, every thorn,
In heaven, on earth, and all in between!
What did I find? Only You, expressing
Your beauty through all. You! Only You!
You! Only You! No Me! No Me!
