I would say to him: Without exception, what has always worked for me is to back off from the dilemma for awhile. Take a break and do something else. Maybe sleep on it for the night. The second thing that always works, is to consult a trusted. level-headed friend, to seek their advice. The friend can be more objective because they are not the one in the midst of the situation.
