Where Time Bends and Leaps in Ukraine
By William He
A dome of glass, twisted and scarred,
Down falls a storm of shattered shards,
Cold rays fade, their light withdraws.
A lone child stumbles in the air,
Vast wilds stretch, his trail is lost,
He is beating back.
He watches broken panes weep,
The river winds in reverse,
The laws of time bend and leap.
Thorns shroud the night's deep folds,
Whispering to brittle boughs,
Grasping nothing of the weight.
Frost blades turn, slow and grim,
Through shifting coats of soldiers,
Ivan peers past rifts in the clouds.
Street clocks mourn,
As bronze crumbles to rust.
Fingers clutch the Julian mark,
The sun devours the hour whole.
How could this land be cast,
The kid waits by the sky-steeds,
Calls on which soul.
A blind colt leaps,
Through steel thorns.
Hooves stir the rising dust,
And dust whirls in frantic flight,
Spirits spiral through the ruin's waste.
Yet Kiev's heart,
Drowned beneath the dim moon's light.
Could not reach,
The fourfold veils of time,
Where the old town lies buried.
