Where Does This Voice Come From? Poem by Mohammad Younus

Where Does This Voice Come From?

Where does this voice come from?
What I hear through my eyes,
echoing from inside my head?
I wonder who plays this lute,
whose melody my eyes never cease to hear.
Awake, I lie listening to this innermost voice,
cut off from all external thoughts and dreams.

At first, confusion reigned—
is this voice within or without?
Gradually, I came to believe this voice is me,
with no inside or outside—
it resonates in every person and place,
my true and essential self.

Sometimes, intoxicated by this voice,
sometimes awakened by its clarity,
Satan whispers, questioning its reality—
is it truth or a beguiling fantasy?
Yet this mystical voice,
touches my heart and soul deeply,
and I too begin to sing and dance
to its divine rhythm, like a whirling dervish.

If I continue to heed this enchanting voice,
where will it lead me?
Oh voice within my head, speaking through my eyes,
tell me:
Am I you, or are you me?
Is this my reality, or a fleeting illusion?
Are you separate from me,
or are you the call guiding me?

Still, I hear the drumbeat of my heart,
echoing the resolute voice:
'I am you! You are me! '
