Where Autumn Echoes in the Blue Gulf of Alaska

A solitary seagull wings its way across the bay,
The cold lights in fading azure,
Bone-wrapped forms drift slow.
Winds graze bear's crinkled skins,
Setting sun catches the spray from the whale,
They seeking out long-lost tranquillity now.
Ice ghosts draw their shallow breath,
Birch mouths weep long beams of light,
And chant old sunken sailor hymns.
Currents map four drowned stars,
Elk eyes burn through the endless bleak,
Flags sink slow, drums cease in muted watch.
Foam falls soft, like sifted ash,
The trench eats the last lost speech,
And silence stings sharp through cool air.

Brine eats down through Ukrainian veins,
Scars root deep, dreamt in twisted arteries even.
Cry-fish split the dusk-stained masks,
Flesh drops whole to hollow ground.
Who hears the tide-sown, fading songs,
And gasps at gold-laced shards of ash,
From deep within the weird gulf,
Peace floats blind, drifting slow across the skin,
They stitch the torn kelp-line net with trembling hands.
Mist pearls drop through quiet dark,
Limbs float slow through weed-fed stream,
And grain claws deep at blue silt.
Feast births glare in cracked white light,
Salo is slowly, darkly chewed.
Wait—frost seas begin to swell,
The icebergs press hard against the throat,
While McKinley's shadow fades, pale.

咽旧时弦乐。

烟硝熏灼,
任疤痕发愕。
忍见乌东裂,
基辅剥。
裹粮欲饲谁托,
叹星条委佩,
顿卢哀壑。
悬兵处、
几经煎铄。
稀土泣,
剩骨河中半躺,
麦畦频攫。
开筵宴、
萨洛深嚼。
溢蟹膏、
夹谷冰川里,
麦金利谑。

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
'Elk': in Alaska are not native but were introduced, primarily from Washington state, to various islands in the late 1920s and 1980s. Two main populations exist: one on Afognak and Raspberry Islands (Kodiak Archipelago) and another on Etolin and Zarembo Islands (Southeast Alaska) . "Salo": Salo or slanina is a European food consisting of salt-cured slabs of pork subcutaneous fat with or without skin and with or without layers of meat. Salo holds a special place in Ukrainian culture and is considered something of a national dish. In leaner years, it was a filling, long-lasting (salt-curing preserves it for up to two years) source of food. It's still the perfect food for cold outdoor work.
