When we were young this life was so simple;
We needed only obey and be thankful.
We had chores around our little farm;
But life was happy when the weather was warm.
The Parson taught us every Sunday God's good ways and;
Our parents taught us how to live with gentle hands.
We learned to love the small and the great;
To obey and to forgive even those who us hate.
Anger was rare, harsh was it rebuked;
And selfishness, envy, and pride, did not our lives pollute.
Our fathers taught us to farm, to sow and reap;
Our mothers taught us tidiness, to bake and keep.
The brothers plowed and picked with Father,
And the sisters sang and swept and baked with Mother.
Brothers and sisters played in perfect harmony,
And were there to love and help each other selflessly.
The seasons passed: summer, spring, fall, winter and
We had such joy as one merry family, in that land.
Spring had planting and little ducklings;
Summer, there was gardening, horses, and watering;
Fall, there were pumpkins, harvest games and baking;
Winter had laughter, Christmas, decorating, carols, and dancing.
The years wound on with such grace and happy charm;
And we grew together like the strings in a bonnet made out of yarn.
When we were young we were free and glad;
Life was a song for every singing lass and lad.
There are not enough words in just one
