What Do You Say When People Ask "What Do You Do? " Poem by Frank Sheehan

What Do You Say When People Ask "What Do You Do? "

That's a question
that always comes up
whenever you converse
with someone or within a group

You should see
the looks on their faces
when I say
"I am a Poet."

They're confused, mystified
wonder if you're telling a joke
They're befuddled, stifled
search for s reply

Before they can
come to their senses
I usually
change the subject

Start a new sequence
of the conversation
dragging on through the
mundane realities of life.
