Behind this poem is the instinct to hold our American democracy to a higher standard of morality ans service than most nation-states acknowledge, and as you rightly observe, most US citizens have abandoned. What has gone wrong? The USA is the most powerful country but what do we do with our power? It's very troubling and I for one make the choice to work within the arts and ignore politics.
