We Are One Nation Under God Poem by James Jennings

We Are One Nation Under God

I'm sitting here tonight thinking about that Muslim ban
All those marching to say they matter
So many calling for our statues to be torn down
I never meant to offend anybody with my Rebel flag
They trash George Washington and Robert E. Lee
Two slave owners with strong American roots
They were outstanding soldiers who paid for having slaves
I don't think Dr. King's dream will never be realized
There's too much division in our country today
Wounds from 150 years ago have been opened again
Battle lines have been drawn and the protests have begun
We are one nation under God and we shouldn't a hyphen divide us
We're all Americans who want to experience the American dream
That wonderful dream promoted by President Kennedy
So many paid the price for our freedom and we can't survive divided
God bless America
