May seem unfounded
The dark side of
Human nature
Unleashed by a technology
That favors
Amplifies
Enables
Encourages
Unworthy fear
Distrust
Division
The sordid illusion of us versus them
Militias roaming the virtual countryside
Looking for trouble
Leaders fomenting discord
Destabilizing societies
Sectarian and religious identities
Mobilized
Weaponized
Self-righteous
Selfish
At war for hardened beliefs and jealous gods
Tolerance and coexistence
Thrown out the window
Civility
Kindness
Generosity of spirit
Brotherly love
Displaced by indifference
Shortsightedness
Hate

Isolated from the source of their good fortune
Anthropomorphized corporations take more and more
Dehumanize those who create their wealth
Distain the earth from which it was extracted
Unwilling to bear their part
Of the cost
Of a just community
Insulated from responsibility
To the common good

This may be so
And yet
It may be an other kind of fear we feel
One welling up inside us
Uninvited yet tuned in
To a higher frequency
Alert and sensitive
Sounding the alarm
A worthy fear

So many have come to harm
Our mother Earth
Sisters and brothers
Cousins and friends
So many we have never met
Bound by the human spirit
Under that
One Universal spirit
Our innate bonds
Generous and kind
Open
Free to move
Roaming peoples
And ones settled
Welcoming the visitor
The migrant
Our futures enriched by their presence
The interplay of cultures
Children at play
Showing us how
Singing and dancing
The sacred message
There is another way

All may be threatened
If so
What can be done
That does not tear us apart
That does not succumb
To those who
Unchecked
Spread fear like wildfire
Coming across the plain
Down the mountain
Fire from the sky
From where will come the strength
The virtues
The wholesomeness
We need to overcome
To remember
We are quite simply one

In the presence of a worthy fear
By choice
We rise
And when we rise
I wonder
Will we see our selves
In our so called enemy's eyes

Will we arm ourselves with compassion
With hope and fierce aspiration
The knowledge that separation
Is illusion
That each and every one of us
Is worthy
Is welcome
Is nothing less than
A divine
Shimmering
Radiant
Beacon of light
Coming up from within
A facet
Of the cosmic gem

Will we know ourselves to be
Waxing crescent consciousness moon
Silver sliver of light high in a vast
Translucent awareness sky
Each and all
Awakening

In the presence or the absence of this radiance
Will we remember or forget
The fundamental truth
There is no us or them

A worthy fear
Wakes us up to this

That there is enough
