Read the poem repeatedly after knowing that this is an epitaph on the tombstone of his beloved wife - so tender, so loving! Every word is chosen with heart-felt emotion. Thanks to Wahab Abdul for telling us the history behind this epitaph.
Blessed is the one for whom so beautiful a poem is written!

This should not be credited only to Mark Twain. He based it on a poem by Robert RIchardson titled Annette. On Twain's daughter's grave stone, the poem as written above was credited to Mr Richardson, although it was modified by Mr Twain.
I saw this recently as an inscription on someone's headstone in Mississippi.
Beautifully simple, a pretty hopeful, happy poem. I wonder the reason, the exact thing that happened, that compelled Twain to write such a good poem. Not the greatest poem out there by any means but nonetheless is a decent poem that any poet should be happy to have written.
It is amazing, the number of prose writers and novelists that have also writte oetry sometime in their ife. I wonder why. But am very glad to see in them this great poetic sensibility.
