Wait Rose Poem by Mary Champion

Wait Rose

Rose is the girl I have wanted
since the day that her eyes first met mine.
I knew I would love her forever,
but I waited for such a long time.
Then I raised enough courage to ask her
and she said we could meet the next day.
I said, 'I will see you at seven,
outside of the Hard Rock Café.'

I was scared she might think I was fooling,
that I treated it all as a game,
so I called her just as she was leaving,
she turned and I tried to explain.

'Oh Rose, don't you know, it's the real thing?
I promise I won't let you down.
So if I'm delayed don't imagine
I'm tasting the highlife downtown.
If a human can make it I'll be there,
I swear that I won't let it be.
So never give up on me sweetheart,
if I'm late Rose, please wait Rose for me.

Then the past, I'd been putting behind me,
caught up with me one bitter day
and the life I'd been living with Rose soon
was looking to be blown away.
The judge said there's no mitigation
you offer that cuts any ice.
You'll do seven years for your actions
don't give me no more of your lies.

And as he was giving his verdict,
sweet Rose stood with tears on her cheek.
I feared all was lost when she heard it,
I knew that my future looked bleak.

I cried to her, 'Rose I still love you,
please tell me that you'll always care.
When they let me out of that prison
I'm gonna go straight Rose I swear.
Oh Rose, don't you know, it's the real thing?
I promise that my love is true,
so if I'm delayed don't imagine
I'll ever forget about you.

If a human can make it I'll be there.
I swear that I won't let it be.
So never give up on me sweetheart,
if I'm late Rose, please wait Rose for me.
