I agree fully to Susan Williams.Such a live casting of one day's performance of Mrs Rukmini Devi and Her disciples is amazing with the inner meanings.

Brought to life by acute description and concentration of imagery. A very fine poem indeed. Also love the line As Bach's chorales made me Christian at least insympathy. Bach has a similar effect on me, being Agnostic. It is my outlandish ambition to write a long poem to mirror one of Bach's fugues. The foundation sounds a miraculous place from your wonderful description. By the way I keep getting that Duplicate comment answer on your Yellow colour poem. Hope it has registered. If not, I would add that I thought it was as good as this one, and that's saying a great deal. Tom Billsborough

A song session under a banyan tree - - now isn't that a lovely way to begin a poem? Girls in moth-wing saris, young men in white tunics- - - I see them, and moth-wing? enchanting! THEN you describe the dancers dancing and your readers' souls are set a-wing: - - - - - - -Bodies and heads tilt as if guided by inner gyroscopes As if all movements are encompassed in imaginary circles As if wearing elaborate headdresses that must not fall Carrying invisible pagodas of heads atop their heads Their steps seem placed in footprints of a larger being Self-presenting in freeze-frames, in precise iterations Like a bead-necklace of moments strung together in a story - - - - - - - -I cannot see a poetic misstep here anywhere! I can see this scene as if I am there, watching them keep those invisible pagodas balanced delicately on their heads Thank you for sharing the sights surrounding your life, they are wondrous!

This is a splendid poem (I mean that word in its original hyperbolic sense of SPLENDORS!) It is both didactic and visionary and the two exist in a delicate balance you maintain. Several of the visionary passages WOWed me: Their steps seem placed in the footsteps of a larger being. This is the true meaning of ritual art. And you amplify this truth in the passage beginning: A myth coming down through time - this could describe the Avatars of Visnu for a believer, or the Archetypes in our modern apprehension of the Spiritual Dimension. Finally: Every gesture or act is self-offering - H. Zimmer cites this element of sacrifice as the core of Hinduism. Your poem makes both dance and belief behind it live in my consciousness without any contradiction. It simply unfolds. Your poem has such resonance: I played a cd of Raga Sarasvatipriya, a goddess presiding over the arts. And read your poem again. The goddess is pleased!
