Visiting A Country Church Poem by Belle Wassermeister

Visiting A Country Church

Rating: 5.0

My husband and I go to church
as often as we can.
While out of town just recently
we met a strange new man.

This preacher of a little church
was challenging the choir
to sing songs based on shouted words,
whatever they'd inspire.

He shouted "Rock! " and those smart folks,
as wise as any sages,
in unison began to sing
that classic: "Rock of Ages".

He shouted "Grace! " and a sublime
look filled every face
as that choir sang that glorious tune
known as "Amazing Grace".

He shouted "Sex! " and shocked them all;
not one could sing a word.
Those singers in stunned silence stood,
and not a sound was heard.

At last a little lady's voice
came quavering from the rear.
It showed some age and longing, too,
anxiety or fear.

"Precious memories..."

Oh, fantastic! ! ! ! A sense of humor and a country church and a little old lady- -three great ingredients for a fun poem. I needed that! !
