Vedas 42 - Kathopanishad Part 3 B - The Chariot Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Vedas 42 - Kathopanishad Part 3 B - The Chariot

Rating: 5.0

A wonderful
Allegory of
A Chariot!

The individual soul,
Enmeshed,
Entangled,
Embroiled,
In the body- mind- senses complex.

The body is the chariot
The intellect is the driver,
The mind - the reins,
The senses are the horses,
The sense objects - the roads!

The Brahman or Self is
The Lord of the Chariot!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is the story of a young boy named Nachiketaa, who goes to meet Yama - the God of Death. The dialogue between Nachiketaa - the brave young boy and Yama - the Ruler of Death, forms the essential feature of Kathopanishad. The dialogue between the two, is intense and profound. For the spiritual seekers, there is much to learn and comprehend from this interesting dialogue.
Kathopanishad is, perhaps, the most widely known Upanishad. The dialogue is long and spreads over six chapters containing 119 verses.
Here, I begin the third chapter, which has the most crucial verse with an explanation through a Similie of a Chariot.
Yama clearly explains to Nachiketaa, what is mortal and what is immortal.
This is, perhaps, the most interesting dialogue that I have ever read.I am attempting to summarise and make it as concise as possible. Each Upanishad should be read from the beginning and in order of the Series, otherwise, the meaning will be lost. It would be difficult to comprehend the philosophy of the Upanishad.

There is no need to write much after reading the comments of my two learned companions on PH Shri. Rajnishji and Shri Kumarmani Ji. Thanks for such a wonderful series.

Soul rides body as chariot and we feel this as soul drives body. Soul has many powers to drive body and control senses. With reference to spiritual texts you have beautifully narrated this philosophical poem. This poem is excellently penned...10

One of the most beautiful, poetic and enlightening allegory in the whole story. It tells us about how the chariot of our body is driven by intellect with mind akin to reins and senses akin to horses. Atman or self controls the overall equation between all these forces. Here the role of Brahman and Atman seems to have merged. Thank you very much, Geeta ji.

Thank you so much for a very fine review of this poem. This allegory of a chariot is one of the best explanation ever given in the Upanishads. I feel blessed to have read such wonderful verses of the Upanishads.
