Amazing poem. It excellently presented the dual character of a person. Some people do good deeds just to feel good about themselves....a feeling of self pride. Great poet.

Wonderful poem. Good deeds so often come veiled with vanity. Beautiful thought so well expressed. Congratulations.

i count on stephen crane to give naked poems which pack a punch. in this one, though, i am unclear what he is feeling at the close of this one. i think i recognize what he is saying about those who consciously do good deeds. often they are done with a paternal attitude, a looking-down on the recipients. they are vain. for a contrast, consider the picture jesus paints of judgment in chapter 25 of matthew's gospel in the new testament. those sheep who are welcomed reply when they are told of their good deeds, when did we? in other words, they did what they did as a matter of course, because they were human, not because they were trying to do good deeds or expected any return for them. this is the essence of agape love, God's love. one thing i appreciate about crane in the closing three lines is his self-reflection, the considering that he may have been wrong. gk

Reading the poem I remembered instantly Geeta's teaching, even Sattwa (goodness) comes wrapped in ego's high vanity. So beautifully this eternal teaching presented in this poem. Thank you for sharing.

An archaic poem..., the emotion said is a momentary reflex without any restraint....the way it is written is good-10
