I suppose it's possible my assumption is drawn on my own experience. And poetry is highly interpretive by definition. But I think that the reason I considered this work in reference to a demon or ill will has to do with the combination of the last phrase, curse of mind, and the 2nd listed topic mental illness. When put together, in context, I interpretated this to be a piece on struggling to be rid of an unwanted presence. I suppose unrequited love is, in its way, a demon of sorts. Haunting us to yearn for that we cannot have

Unequivocal love has been known to cause mental ailments. I suppose the advantage of the scenario, is the subsequent inspiration on the creative front. Thanks for your thoughtful feedback!

Interesting and eerie. Our demons are often like that, seemingly resting beside us as a physical presence. Nicely done

Why would you assume it is a demon? Read it again - but before you do, think of a love you had, that you could not have. Maybe the meaning changes?
