Susan, Much better than a gaggle of geese or even pack of wolves your 'uneasy murder of crows' " redbone hound whined and hobbled slowly and arthritically up the porch steps and lay himself carefully down by the vacant rocking chair." QtR

A gaggle of geese would seem at first glance to be laughable as an subject of fear and desperation.... which means you never had a neighbor ask you to feed their geese while they were gone.... one goose on a rampage is far more fearsome than a pack of hungry wolves... I shall have to write a horror poem on that late afternoon under the gloom of a gray November day.... :)

Hi Kevin. Like you, my granddaughter loves and praises crows every chance she gets. I dislike them because they attack the sparrows' nests in my big fir tree and kill the babies. But the sparrows are a courageous little bird==they chase the huge crows away, swooping down on them, crossing their flight paths, and giving warning to other birds and squirrels. Thank you for finding this poem haunting- that was my intent! ! !

I do think crows get a bad rap, their actually very intelligent and prescient creatures not like those rats we call Gulls. Still you make it very haunting, I don't know why but I'm reminded of Tom Waits Murder in the Red Barn, just in terms of Gothic imagery. I think Poe would approve.

Yes indeed, Paul, our chairs will be empty a lot sooner than we want. Thank you for commenting on this poem.

Death the only sure thing in life and all our chairs are empty sooner than we'd like but who wants to live forever A poem of sadness and loss well penned.

Beautiful poetry; the unkindness of death, the crows know...

I guess there are circumstances in which death is welcome but never those mean raucous crows. Thank you for the compliment!

Poe, the romantic (albeit dark) , would have loved this poem. Nature, the crows and the hound, tell the story of a death and express grief and sadness.... placing death in the domain of the natural. Yes, Poe the romantic would have loved this verse! A great poem, Susan....A perfect 10.

I like the picture you create with this, Susan. No message. Just a picture based on observation. “Murder” of crows; I want to look up the etymology of that. -Glen

Oh dear, actually there was a message. That's okay, I am glad you enjoyed the picture of all those crows lurking around the school

I have always liked crows because they are very smart and they are the birds (some) people love to hate. Because of their raucous cries maybe? I like the imagery here, like watching crows in a movie scene. I liked the 'redbone' hound, in his own corner vignette separate from the rising crows, and the vacant rocking chair.

Thank you for noting thge hound and the empty chair. My granddaughter likes crows too and cites their intelligence. My objection to them began when I noticed their sneak attacks on the sparrows' nests in my fir tree. Grrrrrr!

The crows, a “ murder “, are also sometimes known as an “ unkindness “, murder is very unkind, but perhaps here in your beautiful words, these crows are offering a kind gesture of compassion expressed to the now alone hound, in the form of a Little momentary companionship...

I just read and enjoyed but what is it about me that inspires both you and my husband to be inspired to murder? I think I best solve this mystery... or I might be starring on Forensic Files!

I wonder why a group is crows is called a " murder" . It's illegal in my home state to shoot crows, but I don't know why. They are such a nuisance sometimes! I have a murder of them around my house right now. I have a murder on my mind...

I know why it is called a murder of crows- -every spring they gather across the street to dart over and attack the sparrows's nests and murder their babies. Yes, let; s rise up and call for a national murder the crows day!

Your response to Tom was hilarious! I know why the crows are all gathered around. One of your neighbors (or maybe it's you!) has a walnut tree. The crows collect the walnuts, then drop them on the road or the sidewalk to get them to break open so they can eat them.

Yes, we have walnut trees in the vicinity- -squirrels like them too and plant them in various odd places such as in my hanging planters! Crows too- -they crack em open on the tree across the street or drop them on high school kids' heads.

I think this is a wonderful poem, and a future classic! I loved the part about the row of crows perched on the " wing" of the school, devoted to Poe and poetry. A reference to the crow's larger cousin, the raven, made famous by Poe.

'crows live in a group, sometimes called a murder'... it's good for the murder that you didn't leave the " h" out of " shimmering" ! There are some questions unanswered for me in the poem, bu i liked it. Perhaps a 'conspiracy' of ravens would be more apropos to Poe? bri :)

but the fact is that there are a huge number of crows hanging around across the street and I have watched and watched and I cannot figure out what draws them here this year in this number
