Underneath The Borrow Tree Poem by Richard D Remler

Underneath The Borrow Tree

.................

Underneath this Borrow Tree
That wise old Owl waits for me,
To ask my questions, simply said,
On all those things I've thought or read.

'Can you tell me, Wise Old Owl, Sir,
Why on earth do kittens purr?
And how come apples have a core?
And what's a Butter-Beeker for? '

Respectfully, I waited so
This Owl's wisdom I would know,
But, Oh, he did not look my way.
He had not a single word to say.

And so, underneath this Borrow Tree
I waited very patiently,
And asked another question where,
I thought for sure he'd answer there.

'How can something be a little big?
And just what is a guinea pig?
And do humming birds and humming bees
Live side by side in humming trees? '

Oh, he did not say a single thing.
Look my way or plume a wing.
He simply stared into the night,
Without a care to be polite.

I peered up at that Wise Old Owl,
'Why is it, Sir, you tend to scowl?
I've noticed you are rude, it's true.'
But all that he would say was, 'Who? '

'You! ' I stormed beneath that tree.
And finally he looked down at me,
And said, without any hint of irony
'Child, will you kindly let me be? '

Well, I ran and ran, as you can see.
He scared the buggles out of me!
It isn't every day, it's true,
A creepy Owl yells at you.
