TYRANNY OF CUSTOMS
All the human laws are like writings on the sand
And customs and ritualsare like writings on rocks
You may escape from the punishment of laws
But you can never escape from the tyranny of customs
Specific example is that of Manuwad in our country
We all live from womb to tomb under some rituals
We all live under certain unavoidable restrictions as well
We call them principles rooted in our aged old values
Society has no respect for laws of the land in the matter of
Rituals, traditions, those who violate are subjected to honour killings
Despite 70 years independence laws against un-touchability, Child marriage.
Dowry and marriage outof caste and religion are followed more
in breach than in compliance
Historically, customs and traditions being products of evolutionary process
Unlike laws which are revolutionary, the former have better hold on society
The genesis of the supremacy of tradition and rituals over laws are due to
Ignorance rooted in blind faith passed on from generation to generation.
Blind faith which defies reasoning is a global phenomenon; all human society
Be it; , developed and developing orunder developed are victims of tyranny
of traditions and customs.
