True Treasure Poem by Joe Fraccalvieri

True Treasure

Strewn on every side of Heaven
were treasures by the score
I walked and walked along one road
passing prizes filled with pity,
displayed with pomp,
or disheveled trash and gore…
I saw love and hate, rewards of courage,
unfortunate fortunes of war…
I passed gifts from lovers, photos of friends,
coin of the realm and more
I saw items lost or specifically tossed
Gems and silver and gold… Books and art--
history old-- myths and legends and lore…
Silly things and others smart…
Rags and riches galore

Some I carry... Some I drop...
Some I shelter-- but one made me stop…
So tempting is that treasure
that I have patiently sought
its beauty, truth and value
could never really be bought

Who would have left such treasure fair
upon yonder, distant shore--
emblazoned with wonder and care
that Holy Heaven could only assure
and surely the hand of its artisan
must have had quite an arduous chore

Only my God could have honed such a gift
so I hitched a ride on my way to Heaven
and Jesus pulled over-- gave me a lift
And I was driven to the Treasure Store--
where I was greeted by the Maker of Souls
who stood there patiently waiting for me
beside the open door
