Tomorrow Poem by Deluke Muwanigwa

Tomorrow

Tomorrow

When i wake up tomorrow
I hope i find you well
I hope the war in Ukraine will be over
that the protagonists will have all learnt a valuable lesson
one that will lessen the risks of nuclear war

What's more
I hope the billowing plumes of smoke
which could have easily turned to mushroom clouds
are turned to research material
on the international space station

When i wake up tomorrow
I hope i find you well
These days you can never tell
In the time it takes to say 'perestroika' properly
or to understand the deeper meaning of 'glasnost'
hypersonic missiles might already be on the horizon
rendering tomorrow a horror zone

For, it seems we won't be extinct by meteorites this time
We have that covered
It seems our extinction is written in our psyche
Our self hate
failing to see similarities in our differences
Seeing each other in 365 shades of black

Alas
not heeding the science of existence
that the reason our hearts beating
'Homo sapien, homo sapien, homo sapien'
Is that our survival in posterity is hinged on ignoring the differences in our similarity
So, when i wake up tomorrow
I hope i find you well.
