To The Sea Poem by Jonathan H. Scott

To The Sea

To they that go down to the sea in ships
(The brave that go down to the sea in ships) ,
To the roar and foam of the mighty deep,
Where often you lay your heads to sleep—
Not a word evermore will cross your lips,
You brave that go down to the sea in ships.

To they that go down to the sea in ships
(The gallant go down to the sea in ships) ,
Poor souls ‘neath the stars, may your spirits keep,
While home, safe ashore, your loved ones weep—
Return you will not from your watered crypts,
You gallant are lost to the sea in ships.

To you that go down to the sea in ships
(The dead who are lost to the sea in ships) ,
While you are entombed in eternal sleep,
Another, oh, wishes your souls to reap!
With heavy the seas as the north wind whips,
Be with God now lost to the sea in ships.
