'In the, , , smoking rooms of our stately homes...' ...Not just stately homes but homes throughout the 'toff' area of London, in which society's betters were urging their servants to do their 'duty'. (After all, it would be a bad show if it were known that one had cowards in their employ) . There can never be enough written about the idiocy of war, but world war one was arguably, the most horrifying, idiotic and barbaric of them all. When one reads about British cavalry - very effective against fuzzy-wuzzies in the Sudan - galantly yet hopelessly charging German lines and being torn apart by their machine guns... and the list, as you know well, goes on and on.... Written, as always, with zeal, emotion and honesty.
