To Define Poem by Sharon Namwalizi

To Define

The urge to define
What we felt—
While the weight of outside pressure
Offered no help.

Every conversation was driven by emotion,
By false interrogations,
Every act, every word,
Wrongly interpreted.

With memory blurred by nostalgia,
We built an alternative universe.
Looking back now,
My actions were clear as day.

I didn't need you as a romantic partner
To justify what others thought.
I found a friend in you—
A bond I never knew could be so strong.

Every moment we shared,
The stories we breathed,
The ones we lived—
They were rooted in innocence.

Yet somehow,
Became Corrupted…
Misinterpreted.
Entertainment for some,
A threat to others.

I wanted to see you as a good man.
But the moment I stumbled,
I failed to realize—
That my kindness, so vulnerable,
So selfless,
Could be used against me,
Even by myself.

The mind plays tricks
Once it's made self-aware.

Did you set a trap for me?
Why did your priorities favor me?
Was it to confuse me?

I should have called it out—
But I thought it was kindness.
Kindness, that dangerous thing
So easily misread.

But you…
You're too smart
Not to know what you were doing.

Still, deep down,
I hope your intentions
Were as pure as mine.
That together,
We can wash away the stains,
Tame what never was,
And bury the false spark.
