Three Years In Canada Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Three Years In Canada

Three years in Canada

Shall not fool you title
-they are not consequent
- "Three" are highlighted.

First is of a name change
-'Epekwitk' of Mi'kmaw
-of Mi'kmaq
-into Île Saint-Jean and,
-finally, "Prince Edward! "

Seventeen-Ninety-Nine
-is a shame like others.

In the hand of Europe
-eraser to delete
-the great early name:
- "lying in the water.".

Needs feeling and brain
-and a heart, and knowledge
-to draw lines, compare
-and find the artistic
-realist and nicest.

"Lying in the water".

Then, Nineteen Fifty-Eight
-is a light…at the end of tunnel
- "Canada's first ever Indigenous
-senator; James Gladstone."

But still, the P.M. Pearson
-in Nineteen-Sixty-Seven
-indicates, shows fear
-from those that he calls:
- "Non-Canadians! "

I, sit, use conjunction
-boil in me the questions:
- "Who is who? What is what?
-Which is right? Which is wrong? "
