Dear Beth if the poem is a promise to yourself you wrote a beautiful poem. It's an imaginary battle with yourself and a promise-compromise. I think that you want at times to be kind because then you can't get hurt (though you can't feel happiness, choosing this way) . This is the value of the poem.
