I love the figurative language in this poem! You don't use discrete similes and metaphors, but do something far more creative. Whole stanzas are metaphorical because the language is fused. I can't put it any clearer than that. In fact, that's the impact of much modern poetry - images, ideas, comparisons, everything fused. Check out Hart Crane's poem CHALINESQUE on the Home Page. He was the Master of Fused Language which means you can't paraphrase his poems but you can intuit his meaning. The title tells me this poem relates to Jesus's Passion and his forgiveness for his persecutors. But Jesus is symbolic, he's not the actual player here. It's a person who is walking in the Savior's footsteps.
