I left comments in 2019. Thanks for responding to some comments. I still read 'brags' in stanza 4 as a noun but don't think it is a noun. : ) bri

This man is on about the same level as the drunkard. He leads a fantasy life, which is out of touch with reality, 'he owns all in his fable'. This sort of person is usually insecure. He talks the talk to impress. a fine poem.

This is a heart rending poem with a deep insight into human behaviour. In fact, the village braggart evokes compassion. He may brag and babble a lot, he may drink and remain a drunkard, he may bluff and tell a lot of lies, yet, i would not like to shun him away. Through your poem, you have painted him as a loveable braggart....10

Thank Bri Edwards for considering this poem worthy for your poemlist. The lines above is used to connote that what he brags about has no relevance (No weight like empty cans) and his stories are lies that can be easily detected.

Thank you Bri Edwards for considering this poem worthy for your Poemlist. The two lines you point ed out above are used to connote that the braggart's stories are irrelevant (weightless like empty can) and his stories are lies that can be easily detected.

2 - but in the " topics" list " drunkard" . I guess one can be " drunk" on other than " alcohol" , e.g. power, pride, , ...but the poem does not suggest the reason for the braggart's behaviour/behavior, does it? I'd feel sorry for the guy! : ( stanzas 3 & 6 are favorites. to MyPoemList bri ;)

Most braggarts behaviour is as a result of low esteem. Lack of self confidence. In order to cover this up, many take to drinking and saying what they are not. Thanks for taking your time to comment.

1 - stanza 4: i did not know " brag" could be a noun! " a boastful statement; an act of talking boastfully." braggart: " a person who boasts about achievements or possessions"

I enjoyed this very descriptive tale of a man who lacks both modesty and humility, and is oblivious of the fact. Thank you for an entertaining poem. :)
