Laughing here! ! I swear that you took this poem for a ride and enjoyed it, even the chasing of coyotes and the jumping of fences! That's because you have an adventuresome spirit and a joy in life that shows in your poetry and your comments. Thank you for your lovely comment and all those 10's! ! ! !

It is very wonderful composition in a new style of writing having suspense. Your 'true love' was a horse finally it is known. Let's see what happens finally. On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me 12 miles a-riding 11 fences a-soaring 10 coyotes a-chasing 9 sandhills a-plunging 8 rivers a-crossing 7 bucks a-bucking 6 leaps a-shying 5 soulful looks 4 hooves a-prancing 3 feisty snorts 2 friendly neighs and a loving nicker hello. Beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing.

This was the most fun to write! ! ! I had the famous song to give me a format and all my years of loving horses to give me a smile in my heart as I wrote this!

Worth every day to the lead up to Christmas day. What a treat for the heart when your horse calls out to you approaching, being so glad to see you. Knowing that he /she can expect kindness, a calm voice and a scratch in that favorite spot.

Are you a horse lover as well as a cat lover? Or have an affinity for all animals? You do know that heart-warming nicker, don't you? - -the one a great big animal gives a little human. It's a huge WoW moment for me everytime!

Thank you, Bharati! I had an absolute ball writing this and trying to stick to the rhythm of that Christmas standard! I have thousands of good memories about all the horses I met, even the less than pleasant horses. ;)

It's years since I've mounted a horse but I fondly remember all their lovely greetings which you have covered so splendidly. One horse called Sheba was particularly affectionate but I suspect that was because I took her into her favourite field which had very long grass. It took a lot of effort to get her head up again! I don't know who was the bigger softie, her or the dumb cluck riding her! Nowadays it's Mr Purry who winds me round his big paws. I never learn! . Lovely of you to remember your True Love at Christmas. There's so much two big pals can do together.

Quite an interesting write.......! Very very unique in style and theme! I was confused till I finished the first two stanzas and wondered what was so special about your true love giving you a hello! As I entered the third stanza, I got a clear picture....! Your intimacy with horses...... so deeply manifested here! Really enjoyed! How one's imagination can work wonders! Still there is a smile on my face!

I have a very bad habit of jumping into the middle of my thoughts and riding merrily off as if everybody is on board the same thought train! Nosheen too didn't realize I was talking about a horse until mid-way through the poem! I looked back at my poem and read it from that perspective and I nearly fell off my chair laughing. To think of a man nickering, neighing, snorting and prancing would certainly startle a reader. Before I post poems in the future, I promise to read my poem from the perspective of someone who isn't living inside this squirrely brain of mine and make sure I've settled my readers on the same train car I am in! ! ! ! I thank you for your kindness in continuing to read the poem and finding the delight in horses that I was trying to project. Valsa, you rock! ! !

A very happy Christmas to you. Once again, a very innovative write with a touch of humor. Horse-riding sounds like a lot of fun. It wasn't till i reached the middle that i realized that your love was in fact a horse. LOL. A witty piece characterizing your great sense of humor. A big 10.

Hahahahahaha.... indeed, I cannot recall a time my husband nickered, neighed or pranced... nut he has indeed snorted at times! . I keep thinking of your expression while reading this thinking my true love was a man! ! ! Granted that would be the typical thought- -but we cowgirls rank our horses very high in the personal relationship category. After all, my husband can't barrel race, pole bend, jump high fences, or win a horse race! ! ! I am so glad you got a giggle out of this piece! A smile, a giggle, a laugh is my Christmas gift to you, my dear friend. Thank you for the 10! !

I have been quite fascinated by the philosophical bend of Susan's poems. I have often commented on them in these columns. Now she proved that she is adept in handling humour as well. Similar songs (counting one to ten etc..) exist in every language possibly: in Malayalam, we used to sing one, in my childhood. But one is really wonderful on horses and ranches or should I say, eques-tricks? 10++

Thank you for giving me support on both styles of my writing. I am probably more invested in my serious pieces but I do get a large amount of satisfaction from giving people a laugh or a grin or a giggle in my humorous pieces. Thank you for giving this bit of fun and frolic a 10... if it put a smile in your heart, I am well pleased! ! ! !

This makes me want to live on a ranch, with lots and lots of horses. So well done, Susan.

I'm glad it encouraged you to live a different life! ! ! ! ! How wonderful it would be if people could leave the pressure cooker of city fast-lane living and retreat to land far removed from stress and one-upmanship.... but what is a dream to me may well be a nightmare to others so viva la difference!

Please don't ask me why but I read the last stanza backwards and I must say...nice, please don't ask why I did this, I can't go into a building without adjusting the picture frames or placing the magazines all in one pile...it's a curse, lol, love the humor 10 + Love the humor Susan

Sounds like a very busy and satisfying 12 days, Susan. I love the soulful looks and the feisty snorts, neighs and nickers, but I will leave the soaring, plunging and bucking to you. Very nicely written! :) S

By the time you read this reply, the typos will be gone. The PH elves are on contract to Santa this time of year, so Judith tells me who has much more experience with elves and fairies and such.

Thank you, Seamus! You are so right. I need to relax- - I get stressed out when PH messes with me about these poems... they are my babies, sometimes raucous little babies but I gave birth to them just the same. ;)
