What is the soul of a dog like, I wonder;
When he curls beside me on cold, gray eves.
Does he know that his warmth splits the thunder
Of all the storms my heart conceives?
Is he aware, when he leans in near,
That his silence speaks the kindest part—
That his breath, so soft against my ear,
Can hush the shivers in my heart?
It must be love, the way he waits—
By the door, each time I roam.
He dances joy through swinging gates,
As if my footsteps call him home.
But I wonder: does he ever see,
That all the best in me… is him loving me?
