The Song Of Life: 5. What Hath Come Upon Thee? Poem by Aniruddha Pathak

The Song Of Life: 5. What Hath Come Upon Thee?

This morbid faint-heartedness
O Arjun, at this odd hour of stress,
What hath come upon thee?
Not worthy of thine noble birth,
Name, nor of fame on earth,
No place in sun will it give thee,
Nor to heaven shall it lead thee.|| 2.02 ||

Hearing all the despairs of Arjun, all lamentations, all the vouching of wise words, Krishna confronts him: what has come upon thee at this odd hour when armies are arrayed in battle? Here is the transliteration of the verse.

kutah tvā kashmalam idamviśhame sam-upasthitam |
anārya-juśhţam a-svargyam a-kīrti-karam arjuna || 2.02 ||

Kutah: whence, from where, how; tvā: to thee, you; kashmalam: infatuation, faint-heartedness, ignorance; idam:this; viśhame: at an odd hour and place, in adverse circumstances; sam-upasthitam: has overtaken, has come to (thee): anārya-: (an-ārya)not Aryan like, not honourable; juśhţam: befitting, acceptable to, agreeable to; a-svargyam: not leading to, not fit for a place in heaven; a-kīrti-karam: likely to bring ill fame, causing disgrace; arjuna:O Arjun
