I stand by my earlier comment from March. Now, IF you'd written about your children's views vs. your views, I could accept the poem words.

Alas, I found 3 definitions for CONTINGENCY: .1 -An event that may occur but that is not likely or intended; a possibility.2 - A possibility that must be prepared for; a future emergency. 3 - The condition of being dependent on chance; uncertainty

I'm revisiting poem after Elena sent me a message about my first comment (from over a month ago; thanks, Elena) . She says poem is NOT about 'following the/a crowd'. ;)

The road remains the same but it is viewed and trod upon differently by different generations of people. By the way, how are you, Elena? Read a poem of yours after a long time. Hope, everything is going fine with you.

Elena, While some generalizations may be made about a single generation or graduating class, one should remember that all humans are individuals who may not 'follow the crowd', be that bad OR good. bri : )
