This is a great poem, but why have you (PH) changed the wording? it should read, on line 5: 'For did we then cry, they would heed us' The poem describes the hypocrisy of breeding and caring for birds, only then to shoot them for sport! Standpoints on the rights and wrongs may vary. That aside, the poem should be posted as written.
