This poem, credited to simply burgess was quoted by Johnny Carson on the July 12,1984 episode of The Tonight Show. He looked over at band leader Doc Severenson who was dressed in purple, and said you remind me of a poem I read in third grade... he then quoted it from memory.
Years later, he wrote: O Yes, I wrote the purple cow I'm sorry now I wrote it. But I can tell you anyhow I'll kill you if you quote it.

This is more like a quote than a poem, but I love it. I remember when I was younger someone said this and I was huh. There isn't no such thing as a purple cow.
CristianDolon, your girlfriend must be really old because this poem was written in 1895..... :)
I don't know who you are but you BETTER take this poem down. This poem was written by my girlfriend StarLover from Creative-Poems many years ago... I can't stand a person that would STEAL other work and post it as his own... Take it down or prepare to be banned FOREVER! NOW! ! ! ! !
My mother quoted the purple cow and the floorless room to me in the 1940s. She credited Odgan Nash.
My mother also quoted it to us as children. She was born in 1928. That makes your girlfriend a bit of a stretch, doesn't it?
