I love the debt this and other poems by Mr. Ferlinghetti owe to WC Williams who (IMHO) established for 20th Century poets the precepts that shortness and coherence of thought is an advantage in communicating a thought and that poetry can deal (must deal?) with universal themes that all of us can relate to (the loss of innocence in this case.)
You can smell the autumnal air in this poem. I love the way he describes the little girl. A moment captured.
You don't love that debt. You are an envious critic. If you had said, 'consider the debt', it would have been an interesting point but instead you filed your distaste. Dear Maximum. Poor dear Maximum. You don't love that debt and don't understand how ideas and styles progress. Does French cooking owe South America for the domestication of the potato Maximum?
